The gut and brain are closely connected. Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can disrupt bowel function. Mind-body practices such as yoga, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral therapy may help manage both psychological stress and its gastrointestinal effects.
14. Chronic Constipation in Special Populations
Older adults
Constipation becomes significantly more prevalent with age, affecting up to one-third of adults over 60. Contributing factors include reduced physical activity, lower dietary fiber and fluid intake, taking multiple medications, reduced gut motility with aging, and other coexisting conditions. Management principles are similar to the general population, but extra care is needed to avoid complications like fecal impaction and to monitor for drug interactions.
Pregnant women
Constipation affects up to 40% of pregnant women, primarily due to elevated progesterone slowing intestinal motility, iron supplement use, and physical pressure from the growing uterus. Safe first-line interventions include dietary fiber and increased hydration. Children

People with IBS-C
